RAGAN ART ACADEMY STUDENTS WILL UNVEIL SCULPTURES
Eight weeks ago, middle school students enrolled in the Ragan Art Academy class, held at the Armory Center for the Arts, were given an unusual assignment: They were asked to create sculptures with the theme “Signs and Sign Posts.” To prepare for the project, the young artists strolled around Pasadena, viewing, sketching, and photographing signs and local architecture . Then, using found objects including cardboard, plastic bottles, old toys, art papers, wood scraps and vinyl sheeting, they created 9 three-dimensional pieces.
The artworks will be displayed in the lobby of the George Ellery Hale Building (Permit Center), 175 N. Garfield Ave. in the Pasadena Civic Center area. The students will be honored at an opening reception Monday, June 21, from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Immediately following the reception, the students will be honored at the start of the City Council meeting in the Council Chamber, room S249 at Pasadena City Hall, 100 N. Garfield Ave.
The project was organized as a celebration of local partnerships including arts organizations and municipal participants. Last year, students who were involved in the youth outreach portion of the General Plan Update process exhibited artwork at the Hale Building. The new exhibition was inspired by and builds on the success of that event. “As we move forward, we want to include children, teens and young adults in city activities and plans,” said Deputy Planning and Development Director Stephanie DeWolfe. “Young people are vital residents of Pasadena, where there are so many opportunities for them to become involved in their community.”
